The Year I Chose Myself
Happy Birthday, Better Health
One year ago today, I made a decision that changed everything.
I chose me.
Not just for a few weeks or a new year’s resolution—but for real, lasting change.
365 days later, I’m celebrating:
40+ pounds lost
More energy than I’ve had in years
Improved key health markers
Fewer aches, fewer doctor visits
And a lifestyle that I’m proud to live every day
Was it easy? No. But every step—literal and figurative—was worth it.
What Changed?
The transformation didn’t come from one big shift, but from many small ones that added up over time.
🚶♀️ 10,000 Steps a Day
Walking became my anchor. I made it a daily commitment—no excuses. Whether it was through my house, around the backyard, or on local trails, I hit my 10,000 steps.
These walks became more than just exercise—they became my time to breathe, reflect, and reconnect with myself. I even started bringing my camera along and capturing the world around me, turning walks into moments of creative joy.
🥗 Smarter Eating
I focused on eating to fuel my body, not restrict it. That meant:
Prioritizing protein
Reducing refined carbs and added sugars
Tracking meals
Favorites like Chia seeds, Greek yogurt, low-fat cottage cheese, lean meats, and plenty of colorful vegetables became my everyday staples. It wasn’t about dieting—it was about feeling better from the inside out.
🥾 The Hiking Challenge
I joined a hiking group, met few local hikers and started hiking. That journey reconnected me with nature—and with myself. Each hike built confidence, strength, and joy.
🧘♀️ Somatic Yoga and Mindful Movement
At the start of this journey, I also leaned into somatic yoga to support my mental and emotional wellness. It helped me stay grounded through stress, grief, and uncertainty. That mind-body connection was powerful and necessary.
🧠 Nurturing My Mind and Spirit
This journey wasn’t just about physical change—it deeply impacted my mental and emotional well-being. As I grew stronger, I also grew clearer about the kind of energy I wanted in my life. I found new, meaningful friendships, rekindled old ones, and gracefully let go of connections that no longer aligned with my path. That shift created space for peace.
I also became more spiritual, taking quiet moments to reflect, meditate, and connect with my higher self. Whether it was during a long walk, on a hiking trail, or in the stillness of early morning, I began listening to my inner voice more—and trusting it.
This internal transformation has been just as rewarding as the changes on the outside. I’ve come to realize that true wellness includes the people we surround ourselves with, the thoughts we nurture, and the quiet strength we build within.
The Results?
✅ Down 40+ lbs
✅ Cholesterol dropped significantly
✅ A1C lowered
✅ Joint pain reduced
✅ More energy, deeper sleep, clearer focus
But beyond numbers and milestones, something deeper happened.
A Note From the Heart: For Ollie 💔🐾
In November, my journey took a painful turn—I lost Ollie, my beloved dog and best friend.
He was by my side for the early months of this health transformation. Our walks, his companionship, his joy—he was such a huge part of this new chapter. Losing him left an emptiness I can’t describe.
But walking and hiking—the habits I built with him—became my lifeline through grief. Every step I’ve taken since has carried his memory. Sometimes, when I’m out on a trail or sitting quietly under a tree, I still feel him with me.
This journey started with Ollie by my side. It continues now in his honor.
To Anyone Starting Their Own Journey…
You don’t need to have it all figured out. Just start. Walk. Move. Choose yourself—especially on the hard days.
You’ll be amazed by what one year of small steps can do. I am.
Here’s to year two—built on strength, love, and a whole lot of heart.
Thank you for following along.
